A Great Everyday Drinking Wine

About the Winery

Bodegas Martín Códax was founded in 1986 in the very fashionable Bierzo region in Northwest Spain and was named after the most known Galician troubadour whose medieval poems, the oldest of Galician-Portuguese language, are preserved. In the poems, the troubadour sings to love and to the sea of our coastline.

Martin Codax is situated in the appellation of Rías Baixas, where most of vineyards are situated in close proximity to the sea. Rías Baixas’ climate has an Atlantic influence with cool temperatures and quite a lot of precipitations which decreases in summer time.

From the beginning Martín Códax established a dialogue and a link with the Salnés’Valley society, where its winery is located. The winery was founded thanks to the idea of a group of winegrowers; as a winery made by people for the people. Set up by 270 members, the winery also relies on the collaboration of 300 families whose grapes are supplied to them. As a big family, they work together in order to ensure our wines have the highest possible quality.

Martin Códax is linked to art and culture because from the beginning, the winery has supported all types of cultural and art expressions; from the most traditional ones to the most vanguard in the last few years. In this way, the winery has taken Galician culture to all of the parts of the world where Martín Códax is available.

Martín Códax focuses on the environment, always looking for the sustainable option and reducing its carbon footprint. Promoting sustainability is an objective for all of the winery staff making this a priority of all the members of the enterprise.

About the Wine

Mencia is the best of the red wine varieties native to Galicia. This wine shows extremely attractive and intense aromatics of blueberries and violets with nuances of star anise. There is also a delightful herbal character coming through. Sourced from from 4 separate hillside vineyards with 80 year old vines planted in  flaky slate and composite clay soils and then aged in both American and French oak. In the mouth there is firm acidity and freshness alongside a good mineral complexity. This wine shows tremendous value and it is a brilliant bottle for everyday drinking.

Great with roasted or stewed meats, small game, carpaccio, cured meats, pastas, pates and goats cheese.

Enjoy:)
