Gris & Grigio Mixed 6 pack

Grapes & Lager

Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio? This is quite an interesting mix because some, but most don’t know that these two wines styles are made from exactly the same grape – Pinot Gris being the French Name, Pinot Grigio being the Italian name. Also, traditionally the wines styles are vastly different. The French Pinot Gris style tends to be richer, fuller, textural and can be quite powerful. The Italian style tends to be lighter and fresher, "drink-now" styles. It doesn't really matter as most of the wines below are true to the styles, not linear to styles but you can see that the winemaker is heading to the Gris or Grigio style. So what do we have in this pack.

Firstly, a great little Grigio from Romania.  Yes, it's true it been one of the biggest surprises for the year, then a classic Grigio from Veneto, SC Panell nails the Grigio from SA. Punt Rd Vic shows us their take on Gris, Sidewood is just down the road and then there’s fuller style Chartley Estate from the apple Isle.

Calusari Pinot Grigio

This wine shows classic Pinot Grigio, crisp apple and pear, light on the palate but full of juicy fruit and clean grapefruit like finish. Food, well somewhere warm at the moment, oysters, and chilli mussels, or just sit and drink.  I love what this Aussie winemaker is doing with Recas; the wines are fresh, well-made and exceptional value for money. Great wine although stylistically it’s a bit fuller.

Cielo e Terra Casa Defra Pinot Grigio

The Casa Defra Pinot Grigio is a great all-round white, and able to cope with all robust elements; strong flavours, saltiness, earthiness and heat. Yellow tinge in the colour.  Persistent bouquet with notes of fresh pear and other stonefruits.  Palate, dry and soft, with lingering aftertaste of flowers, pear, melon and stonefruits.  Well balanced I liked this wine because being more of Gris lover this just had a bit more depth.

S. C. Pannell Pinot Grigio

As Pannell explains it’s neither Grigio nor Gris in style, but rather combines the best of both. The nose is quite perfumed, with aromas of pears, florals and subtle spice. The palate is richer and more concentrated than many Grigios but still strikingly fresh, with great balance and length. Such a great all around wine, great winemaker no matter what he makes this wine is a good comprise on both styles.

Punt Road Pinot Gris

This cheeky little pinot gris is more textural than fruity, and is a nice departure from the usual. Varietal aromas of pears and almonds decorate the nose, along with hints of honeysuckle florals and lemons. The palate is vibrant and delicate, with savoury flavours from the oak, a buttery texture, and a dry, zippy finish. It would be great with Thai dishes. Lovely wine the pears and almonds on the nose dragged me in on the first sniff.

Sidewood Pinot Gris

Pale straw with copper-pink hues, this wine displays vibrant aromas of guava and passionfruit on the nose. This leads to an intense flavour of nashi pear and tropical fruits on the palate with great structure from the crisp and well balanced acid. With its full structure, superb minerality and generous full mid palate it finishes with outstanding length and balance. The wine does have a little Grigio styling to it, with the freshness, good wine.

Chartley Estate Pinot Gris

Distinctive rich golden colour to the eye with green tints on the periphery. Highly aromatic with classic varietal Pinot Gris characteristics of musk, pear and rose petal, coming from a great vintage. Quite a zesty finish with some serious Pinot Gris palate weight. Probably the most Gris of the Aussie bunch in color and style well done and nice power.

Enjoy :)
