NV Didier Chopin 'Grand Reserve' 1ER CRU Blanc de Blancs Champagne

Premier Cru (1er) 'Grower'  Blanc de Blancs Champagne

Didier Chopin is a relatively new ‘independent’ grower/ producer/negotiant of Champagne, owned and run by Didier & Karine Chopin, who together have 50 years experience in the French wine industry and their two children In Champlat-Boujacourt, in La Vallee de la Marne, 25kms for Epernay & Reims. Their first wine was produced in 1989 with fruit sourced from Karine’s family vineyard, today they own & produce Champagne solely from their own vineyards.

Now 20 years on, the family has started to develop a reputation producing high quality cuvees from their family vineyard and their passion for their own style of which includes extended time on lees in the bottle, Whereas most other producers  NV cuvees have up-to 18months on lees, Didier’s cuvees have minimum 3-5 years creating wines which have much more complexity and structure compared to their rivals from the region, especially at this price point.

Yes we have two Grand Reserve Blanc de Blancs for Didier Chopin, but this one is their '1er Cru' (Premier Cru) whats the difference, basically the plot or terroir that the fruit is sourced from, '1er Cru' is a legal classification given to region, vineyard or plot that has shown over many growing seasons to produce and much higher fruit quality.

I this case, it comes from the families plot in the mythical region of 'Cotes des Blancs', known for its high quality Chardonnay grapes, and beautiful mineral edge. This wine is quite lifted and aromatic (white flowers) again nice baked pastry from the extended lees contact. Palate is super fresh and such great presence, and that long finish you get from wines from the Cotes des Blancs. And in a fantastic clear bottle (I just like clear bottles for blanc de blancs) great champagne and an absolute bargain for a premier cru quality.
