The 4 generations of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been growing wines for more than a century and a half, first as farmers running the Manescotto estate in the village of La Morra for the marchesa Giulia Colbert Faletti di Barolo, and then on their own property since the late 1800s
The Mascarello family property extends over 15 hectares of vineyards, all located within the Barolo wine-growing area. Some, like the MONPRIVATO vineyard, can now be said to be a part of the family great family history and regarded as some of the great wines of the world.
Barbera d'Alba is a key DOC of Piedmont, north-western Italy, famed for its tangy, cherry-like red wines made from Barbera grapes.
Barbera (like so many Italian wine grape varieties) has ancient origins, although it has only been traceably documented since the 17th century.
The 2008 Barbera d'Alba Santo Stefano di Perno opens with an intoxicating, heady bouquet of smoke, grilled herbs with hints of crushed raspberries and violets, undertones of herbs, woodland berries and cacao. The taste follows on the palate with a velvety tannins and a medium body make for an elegant, yet structured wine in this juicy, seductive, totally expressive Barbera.
An amazing gift of this wine is its ability to pair well with a variety of foods without ever compensating its quality and enjoyment. Foods such as medium-aged cheeses, ragu pasta sauces, truffle-infused Piemontese omelets, and roasted lamb shank.
The wine shows striking depth and purity while never coming across as heavy. This is as head-turning and sexy a Barbera as was made in 2011. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018.
