Let's not get Smar(t)agd about the Power of this Grüner Veltliner!
ABOUT THE WINERY
The vineyards of the Austrian Wachau valley are famous for their high quality wine. The wine plantation of the Family Hutter situated in this valley has been cultivated, managed and nurtured with loving care over a period of many Hutter generations. At this moment in time Fritz Hutter III reigns over the plantation. He dedicates most of his time to the vineyards and wine cellars to ensure and attend to the highest wine quality production possible. His wife Elfriede is responsible for the marketing and sale of the wines which takes place directly on the wine estate. Furthermore she cares for the friendly hospitality and gastronomic well being of the guests in the estates own tavern/restaurant. This tavern may also be reserved and booked for special larger celebrations and occasions.
ABOUT THE WINE
Hutter Smaragd is a very, very well known producer in this region. Wachau is probably regarded as one of the top wine growing regions of Austria. Smaragd is a subregion of Wachau, and probably regarded as producing probably the most powerful Grüner Veltliner from Austria. Probably slightly richer, but very, very high quality again. This is a single vineyard wine. Well made, just lovely clean, fresh Grüner. Spicy, fruit-driven sort of flavours in the wine. It's just a really nice, really great example of Grüner Veltliner. It is a wine that people would not have drunk much before. If people are familiar with Grüner Veltliner then they have probably seen it on wine lists. You don't necessarily see Grüner Veltliner from this particular region however. You probably don't see Grüner Veltliner necessarily that are this rich and this powerful. They tend to be from other regions that are quite a bit more elegant and a lot easier to drink and probably a lot cheaper in real terms. Smaragd has a very good reputation for producing quite powerful Grüner Veltliner. But it's got that really lovely Grüner spiciness that Grüner Veltliner should have as well.
