Kaesler 'Alte Ruben' Shiraz 2013

From an Original Barossa Pioneering Family

Kaesler is a privately owned wine company that produces estate grown wines from vineyards as old as 1893. The Kaesler family were pioneers who settled in the Barossa Valley in the 1840’s. In 1891 they bought a parcel of land and in 1893 planted their first vines.

Today Kaesler wines are made from these ancient, dry grown vineyards, by the third owners of this magnificent property.

100% Shiraz sourced from Kaesler estate vines planted in 1899 at Marananga. This vineyard has a soil type that is very unique and quite different to most of the Kaesler vineyards. Its structure is quite varied, but essentially it is an old river bed, with the higher side of the vineyard perched on a clay and shale base. The clay really helps with moisture retention and it this part of the vineyard from which the Alte Reben is sourced. We always suspected that we could do a single vineyard wine from this patch, as it is fairly large by old vine standards, not too many can boast custody of nine acres of Shiraz planted three centuries ago in 1899, it’s a national treasure.

Blackberries, loganberries, mulberries with hints of espresso and dark chocolate. Huge length of flavour on the palate – you can taste some of the oak and youthful tannin, gritty chalky and raw, yet elegant – it’s a pup of a wine and will age with grace. 20-year proposition in correct cellaring
