A Complex and Satisfying Sauvignon Blanc Semillon
"I really get the gun smoke component of this wild yeast-fermented and extensively lees-stirred wine; the flavours build progressively each time it is tasted, Mark Warren identifying seven different flavours. The best feature is the focused, tight and long back-palate and finish." - James Halliday
Marq wines is a boutique Margaret River wine producer dedicated to exploring the potential of alternative varieties and unusual winemaking techniques. Owned by respected winemaker and Curtin University lecturer Mark Warren, Marq Wines are designed to introduce the consumer to a new style of wine drinking.
Blends of Semillon and Sauvignon blanc are well known and well regarded in Margaret River, where both varieties excel. The combination of the two varieties makes a more complete wine than either variety individually. Sadly this classic blend is all too often made into a simple, light, easy drinking commodity wine that fails to truly excite. With that in mind Marq Wines wanted to make a wine that was about more than the obvious fruit characters of the varieties, they wanted the wine to have complexity and texture, they wanted to make a wine they wanted to drink.
To achieve this goal they have used a range of winemaking techniques, most notably employing 100% ‘wild’yeast fermentation where by the natural yeast growing on the berry conducts the fermentation. These natural yeasts produce novel characters that add interest to the wines and are also responsible for an enhanced mouth feel. Additionally they have conducted the fermentation in older white barrels not for the oak effect but to allow aging and ‘working’ of the yeast lees. With these and the other techniques used the wine is described as ‘fully worked’ in winemaker speak – and we think the effort involved is well worth it.
The MARQ WINES 'Wild & Worked' Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2012 is pale lemon green in colour, with a lifted and attractive aroma of gooseberry and quince with some gun smoke and cut grass characters. Its palate is rich and textural with flavours of ripe gooseberry, pear, preserved lemon and pastry. The wine has refreshing zesty acidity that is fine and chalky. The finish is long with a tightly focused mineral thread.
