Harewood Estate 'Great Southern' SBS 2018

Australia

5 Star Winery

About the Wine Maker

In 2003 James Kellie, for many years a winemaker with Howard Park, and responsible for the contract making of Harewoods wines since 1998, purchased the estate with his father and sister as partners. Events moved quickly thereafter: a 300-tonne winery was constructed, offering both contract-winemaking services for the Great Southern region and the ability to expand the Harewood range to include subregional wines that demonstrate the differences in style across the region. In January 2010 James, together with wife Careena, purchased his father's and sister's shares in the business, and are now 100% owners.

Harewood Estate has again received the highest recognition possible from wine critic James Halliday in his highly anticipated 2014 Australian Wine Companion. This is the ninth consecutive year that Harewood has received the elusive rating, placing them amongst the best in Australia, and is as much a comment on the quality of wine grapes grown throughout the Great Southern region.

About the Wine

The fruit for this wine was sourced from higher altitude vineyards in the cool climate coastal sub-regions of Denmark. Only the finest, more pristine, “free-run” juice was used in the production of this wine resulting in a wine of outstanding elegance, free from harsh, phenolic character. A portion of each variety was barrel fermented in larger French oak puncheons, introducing a textural complexity top the mid palate. Minimal fining and the use of screw caps are all further steps towards capturing the inherent delicacy of this cool climate blend.

This results in a wine with a brilliant, pale colour with youthful green tinges. An intense nose combining the lemon zest and snow pea of Semillon with the gooseberry and herbaceous aromas of cool climate Sauvignon Blanc. The intensity of the nose is reflected in the seamless purity of the palate. Mouth-watering citrus fruits are balanced by hints of more tropical passionfruit leading to a long and lingering finish of crisp grapefruit acidity.

Enjoy:)
