About the Wine Maker
Te Whare Ra (TWR) is a small vineyard and winery located in the Marlborough sub-region of Renwick. The 11Ha vineyard which is planted with 7 different varieties was first planted in 1979 and since 2003 has been owned by winemakers Anna & Jason Flowerday. Yields are kept low, the vineyard is managed with a combination of organic and biodynamic practices and all the fruit is hand picked and hand-sorted. The wines are made with minimal intervention in a small winery which has been specifically set up for small batch winemaking. The aromatic wines from TWR are slowly but surely carving out a reputation for this winery as being one of New Zealand’s elite.
About the Wine
TWR's old vines (planted in late 70s/early 80s) combined with the growing conditions and climate in Marlborough have resulted in a world class Riesling as defined by its purity, elegance and age ability. The fruit from these old vines has ripe fruit concentration and great structure as well as high natural acidity that lends itself very well to making a dry style of Riesling. All the grapes for this wine were hand-picked and hand -sorted. The fruit was then destemmed, not crushed, then air-bag pressed. A proportion of parcels were whole bunch pressed. Free run cut was made on taste at approximately 550lt/t. The TWR Riesling ‘D’ is Certified Organic.
