About the WineMaker
Originally known as the Cooperatia de Pañafiel in the year 1927, the Bodegas Protos winery was the first winery of the Ribera del Duero in Spain. This project started with the union of some of the best Spanish winemakers at the time and through their grand efforts and perseverance for each wine vintage, they became one of the best wineries of Spain.
With their expansion into the Rueda DO they now also craft wines with very elegant expressions of the Spanish Verdejo grape.
The name “Protos” comes from Greek, meaning “first.” This name reflects the fact that they were the first winery of Peñafiel, Spain, founding winemaking in the Ribera. The incredible growth of the Bodegas Protos winery led them to expand first nationally and then internationally, and thanks to the wonderful wines they created, this winery was able to construct their new facilities in the surrounding mountains. In the 1980s the Consejo Regulador (the wine regulating entity of Spain) recognised the Bodegas Protos winery for their great quality of wine by founding the Ribera del Duero DO of Spain.
The modern facilities of the Protos winery of the Ribera del Duero is situated between the historic streets Rogers Stirk Harbour and Alonso Balaguer. With nearly 20,000 square metres the Protos winery produces 3.5 million bottles of wine per year, making them one of Spain´s largest wineries.
The Bodegas Protos winery has various facilities located throughout different Denominations of Origins in Spain. One of the most well-known of these wineries is the Protos winery in the Rueda, in the town of La Seca, Valladoild. This specific Protos facility has become well-known for crafting some of the best Verdejo white wines of the world. The Bodgas Protos winery exports these wines to over 91 different counties around the world in five different continents; the Americas, Asia, Oceania, Europe, and Africa.
About the Wine
This Spanish white wine has been crafted from 100% Verdejo grapes and presents the full elegant and seductive nature of the Spanish Verdejo grapes from the Rueda. The Verdejo grapes used to produce Protos Verdejo were harvested by hand and cold macerated before receiving a unique fermentation at 14 ºC. This fermentation is finished at low temperatures in stainless steel vats before it is stabilized and bottled. This unique vinification process has given this un-aged Spanish white wine, Protos Verdejo, grand creaminess, pleasant silkiness, and extraordinary aromatics.
As this wine is first poured from the bottle it has an expressive greenish yellow colored body that is bright with pale golden edges. This white wine has a fine and delicate tear. It has grand aromatics that are dominated by tropical fruits such as pineapple, passions fruits, and melons. There are subtle vegetable aromas along with white floral and fennel notes that are entwined by delicate honey aromatics. It has a creamy entrance onto the palate with pleasant fruit sensations and a pleasantly sweet character that is floral and very fresh. There is lively acidity that is well-balanced between fruity notes and overall freshness.
